The Royal Hotel Whitby

Had a lovely stay here. Booked a Superior Room with Sea View, and wasn't disappointed. Room 142 if you're interested. Very warm welcome on arrival, beautiful room, great view, great bar and very nice breakfast. Self service buffet breakfast, food was excellent, but if i'm being picky the replenishment of the dishes was not great. No matter, this is a great place to stay and enjoy the amazing seaside town of Whitby!

Landed here on a friday night when it was very busy initial concern was noise but once settled in our room didnt notice it. The sea view was nice. Bed wasnt the comfiest carpets in the room were quite tired and same applied to the frosting on the bathroom windows. Over all the room has everything basic that you need and was clean the staff on reception were pleasant.

First visit to Whitby,with our little dog. We went at the end of January and it coincided the same night as the Rocky Horrow Show at the Hotel, and the eve of some pagan Spring event, so it was buzzing! The hotel is undergoing refurbishment and the bar and dining areas have been given a steam punk makeover, our room was still of that dated victorian era, and whilst I love this old and tired charm, its probably not to everyone's taste! Beds were comfy, views straight out onto the sea and the Abbey. We loved the old town with lots of fish and chip shops, Whitby jet jewellery shops and the usual British seaside tat. Worth a visit but not sure I'd want to be there during peak season.

Booked in here for a VIP stay in December when Terrorvision were playing there. Warm & friendly staff who were always helpful. Room was clean, tidy, with great views over to the Abbey. Our room was very spacious and well equipped. Located just out of the main town, up a reasonably steep hill, that's a walk not for everyone, very minor point though. Would definitely visit again.

Booked with a wowcher for two couples..arrived and scaffolding around..not the best 1st impression,but the receptionist soon dispelled that. Warm and friendly and informative, rooms not ready, went into bar, lovely decor and again friendly staff. Got our keys..our room , a bit tired but very clean , 2nd room was lovely. Ground floor rooms with spectacular views of Abbey. Parking is payable nightly, £6 per night , payable on check out, not a big car park, and on a slope, as are most things in Whitby! ..Wowcher stated Prosecco on arrival, and it was..sat in an ice bucket with 2 wine flutes, a very lovely touch. Breakfast was substantial, everything you needed and could ask for, different eggs on asking too. . Location is fantastic, so close to everything. We had lunch in the bar and at first thought looked pricey.but when it arrived , beautifully presented, and the dressed salad was so fresh and tasty, was definitely worth it. All in all would definitely stay here again even without a Wowcher...

This hotel would not be to everyone's taste, but for us it has to be 5 stars. Room was exceptional a deluxe room. The whole vibe of the hotel is quirky in a good way, still going through expensive restoration. Keep up the good work and standards.

Room was ok quite big needs updating though and maybe a chest of drawers in the big space where they just had a safe, bed was comfy and spare pillows in wardrobe , the room was quite big though and the tv was a little one on the wall in the corner, seemed miles away. there were plenty of tea coffee and lovely biscuits were in the room, the downside is you can hear the people upstairs walking around, 2 bars downstairs one quite busy the other was quieter when we went in as it was near closing time, but had to walk into bigger bar to get drinks. breakfast was self serve , plenty of food to go round as it was not so busy. They do have 2 car parks which you get charged for think it was £6.00 as we were there 1 night, one car park which as mainly reserved spaces and then just across from that they have a dirt one where no spaces marked out its just find anywhere to park really and considering the size of the hotel there isn't enough spaces. so i'd try and reserve one but there aren't that many. The room we had was on the 2nd floor i think or maybe the 3rd went up a few steps and we had a sea view. we stayed another night a couple of weeks later This review is for the 2nd time we went, this time we just had a standard double, although the bed was quite large for a double i thought, and comfy, the photo of the bed the sheets looked creased that because i took the photo as we were leaving forgot when we first arrived, so they didn't look like that to start with. The location is good for a view as its on top of the cliff, the atmosphere for this trip was a bit busier than previous as there was a Rocky Horror Picture Show event on, which was right next to our room , luckily by the time we were going to sleep it had calmed down, if you had wanted a quiet early night though you would have had no chance around that area. Also you could hear the neighbours talking all the time, don’t know if they were just talking loud or the rooms have paper thin walls, this was just during the day , at night didn’t hear them, but they were probably out. The room was in need of some attention , i've posted photos of the room and things we noticed, only there for a night but in this room that was long enough, You have to pull the net curtains across if you wanted privacy during the day as the window looks out onto the street and people walking past can just look in. The photos show the room and details. We paid for breakfast which the first time was no problem , but this time it was busier and as its a buffet style breakfast where you get your own food , the items for the cooked breakfast soon ran out and people were queuing, then when it eventually came out it was gone and they needed more, the chef needs to organise it more and make sure they are on top of the food, not waiting till its run out then cooking more, we gave up in the end and just had yoghurt and fruit and weetabix , wasn't very pleased as we were wanting the cooked breakfast at the price they charge. we don't think we will be going again as disappointed this time , they need to do something about the breakfast as latest you can go in is 10.00am , yet people seemed to be still waiting for food from earlier, and rooms could do with a paint, and decorate.

Nice hotel - they upgraded us to 4 pillar room which has been done out very nicely. Did have sea room booked anyway and this has nice sea view. Chad scaffolding at time due to work outside which is fine. Breakfast the next day was good quality and tasty but didn’t necessarily seem enough for some people but think they weee short staffed. Overall better than last stay since all the renovations. Would stay again and dog friendly.
